When I think about Steven Brust as the poor man’s Zelazny, it’s not that I think he’s a poor substitute, or a substitute at all…I do mean that his story is not about the princes, it’s about people who are twice over at the bottom of the caste system, but are doing pretty well for themselves anyway, thank you very much.
I do feel that the question “Am I the only one who..” on the internet is one of the most irritating starts there is, but sometimes I feel like that, wrt Brust. He is not as popular as he should be, dammit! What is everyone’s damage? He’s objectively prolific, subjectively flexible, and just fun, even when the characters aren’t having any. And, hell, he knows how to write a mean meal.
One of the people who knows the truth, and knows how I feel, dropped something in the post to me recently. I don’t do physical books so much anymore, but *this* is exactly the reason for the continued existence of the paperback. Whee! I could not be more grateful. So excite!
And, hell, he wrote Firefly fanfic. How much more one of us could he be?
