Concerning Mating: How Shipper Goggles Can Distort Canon
Quickly now, before the lights go out.
PREFACE: Meta is not my forte. I often lack the patience to lay out “things as I see them” in a way other people can consume and react to. Usually, I get distracted by my feelings and meander off onto topics that are only tangentially related to the subject at hand. Fair warning here, I may well meander or abandon objectivity for face-clawing. Such is my nature.
I’m one of the people that came away from the first season thinking that Scott and Derek would make a fun “I’m on a break!” couple as Derek tries to assert dominance, and actually getting Scott to give into some more basic and aggressive of his lupine instincts (because he isn’t anyone’s beta, and he’s willing to prove it), and things just get sweaty and naked from there. But every time I start to think it through, Scott becomes resounding sixteen, Derek becomes resoundingly in his mid-20s, and just as important—the king of bad decisions and emotional abuse as motivation. Yet—teenage hooker!Dean? All over that illegal multiple times over shit. Beacon Hills is more pristine? Dean was thrust (yeah, I did intend that) into many adult roles before time—soldier, parent—why not this one, all in the interest of survival?
I dunno. Scott and Stiles should stick to their age group. Danny only *looks* 25, right? Totally fine.
