The story always risked “well, if their best friend (or their enemy, or their manipulator) is Superman, where’s the tension? But slash aside, I think this choice of “gripping” scenes shows how many different reasons there were for Dean to grab a hold of Cas. In jocularity, relief, support…I think they did a pretty good job of having a supporting character drop by over a 4 year period without tipping over the playing field *or* artificially neutering him. And, good lord, look at Dean’s face in the last frame. And think of Dean’s face when Cas was saying these words to him. Way to evolve a relationship, peeps.
Even if I wasn’t shipping it, I’d still be rooting for it.
